Fragrance-Free Schools
and Public Places
"Clean doesn't have a smell. Chemical companies will continue to pollute and damage our bodies if we buy their products. It's your choice."
Lisa Malyon, Founder, Indoor Air Aware

Welcome to a national public health awareness campaign designed to reduce chemical fragrance use in the interest of our health and to protect the NHS.
Every breath we take impacts our health and life expectancy. We must protect the right to clean air without harmful pollutants.
Manufactuers of fragranced products will not stop developing and selling products unless we stop buying them. We hope this campaign provides you with the information you require to live a fragrance-free, healthier, and longer-life.
THE FACTS
Health facts
-
1 in 3 adults report health effects from fragranced products including breathing problems, migraines, skin reaction, brain fog and nausea (34%)
-
3 in 5 asthmatics are affected by fragranced products (57%)
-
A mother’s exposure to fragranced cleaning products doubles the likelihood of her child having a persistent wheeze.
-
More than 1 in 100 people are autistic - fragranced environments cause sensory overload and impact learning ability.
-
Many synthetic fragrances contain known carcinogens (cancer-causing), and many generate cancer-causing chemicals when they react with the air.
Chemistry
-
A single fragrance in a product can consist of over 100 chemicals. Despite the health risks, manufacturers are not required to disclose anything more than the word ‘fragrance’.
-
Chemicals in fragrance can include hazardous air pollutants like formaldehyde and acetaldehyde.
-
Fragranced laundry products include chemicals designed to off-gas into the air for weeks or months.
-
Fragrance chemicals react with indoor ozone within minutes, creating cancerous formaldehyde and invisible lung-penetrating particles.
-
Synthetic fragrances work the same way as natural scents - such as a flower - but they are man-made chemical mixtures designed to travel through the air and last longer.
-
When you breathe them in, the molecules bind to smell receptors in your nose and at the same time enter your lungs and bloodstream.
-
Fragrance exposure isn’t just a smell, it’s a complex chemical mixture entering the body through the air.
